Any parent of a child with autism will tell you that they want their child to find a place where they fit in and belong. My mom sent me this article a couple of months ago and I thought it was a really neat idea. The topic of social clubs around interests, such as Legos has seemed to pop up all over the place recently. It certainly seems like a common interest among kids with ASD and really most kids in general and what a better way to foster creativity! I particularly like the basic sets of Legos where there are not specific models to build because at times kids may become stuck on building the same thing over and over again. Of course at first you may need to provide your child with some choices of things to build and may even want to show your own model for them to follow initially but the goal is for them to eventually use their imagination to build their own creations. If your child, student, or friend loves Legos and these types of clubs are not available in your area, think about having play dates around Lego themes and you never know, as more and more kids become interested, it might turn into a social group as well!
